Fuller Academy Blooms with Community Spirit During Garden Build Day

Fuller Academy came alive with energy, collaboration and a shared sense of purpose as Home Depot associates from South Florida gathered on campus for a special community project. The event, part of the school’s Butterfly Garden Groundbreaking Celebration, brought together volunteers dedicated to creating enriching outdoor learning spaces for students.

Throughout the day, teams worked side by side to create engaging outdoor spaces that will benefit students for years to come. A highlight of the project was the construction of a butterfly garden, carefully designed to attract pollinators and support hands-on learning about nature and life cycles.

Volunteers also built a vegetable garden, adding another interactive element where students can explore topics like healthy eating, sustainability, and plant growth. Research shows that only about 1 in 10 children eat the recommended daily amount of fruits and vegetables, making access to fresh, homegrown produce and hands-on experiences more important than ever in shaping healthy habits at a young age. By incorporating gardening into their environment, students are more likely to develop a lasting connection to nutritious foods. The hope is for Fuller Academy students to be able to craft their own salads with produce grown in the gardens in the near future.

Nearly half of children don’t eat vegetables every day—highlighting the importance of hands-on learning spaces like school gardens to encourage healthy habits early.

Additional improvements around the campus helped round out the transformation, such as mulch replacement to best fit the structural needs of the campus, leaving the school with new spaces that are both functional and inspiring.

The event showcased the power of partnership and community involvement. Home Depot associates brought not only their skills, but also a strong sense of teamwork and dedication to supporting local schools. Their efforts created an environment that will encourage curiosity, responsibility, and a deeper connection to the natural world.

Staff and students at Fuller Academy expressed their appreciation for the volunteers’ generosity and hard work. These new gardens will serve as valuable learning tools, offering students opportunities to learn beyond the classroom in a hands-on setting.

This special day marked an exciting milestone for Fuller Academy, setting the stage for continued growth and outdoor learning experiences made possible through community support.
